Crossed Keys is the badge of the Concierge  Concierge - Shopping and Antiquing

The Town of Monterey is a good place to start for shopping in Highland County. Touring the county will give you the opportunity of visiting all kinds of stores and we will cover most of those as well.  For Dining or Service related businesses check out our separate page links at the bottom of this page.  Please click on highlighted businesses for their web page or business information.

Monterey, VirginiaStarting at the Highland Inn on Main Street the first business to the west is Morning Glories & Moonflowers which in addition to a seasonal selection of garden items, has a very nice gift shop. The next shop is Gallery of Mountain Secretswhich has a large collection of artwork and fine crafts. Next door is Evelyn's Pantrywith all kinds of specialty foods and Antiques at Narrowfellow. In the log cabin is The Attic, a very nice thrift store that benefits Highland's S.P.C.A. Blanchard Furniture does fine woodworking in the next shop.  The large building on the corner of Spruce and Main is H & H Cash Store, an old time General Store.  Cross over to the other side of Main Street to start on businesses while heading east.  The first shop past the courthouse is Highland County Crafts a non-profit organization that provides an outlet for Highlands artisans and crafter's.  The next shop is Hi-Land Video & Gifts our local video rental store that also has gifts. Next door is Mill Alley Art & Frame and Highland's Mountain Flowers our local florist shop.  This brings you to the intersection of Water and Main Streets.  One block south on Water Street is our local VABC Retail Liquor Store. Continuing on Main Street, the business at the corner of Water Street is the Farmland Store which has gifts and items for country living.  A block and a half further east will take you to the counties only major chain store, Dollar General.  Looking down one block north from Main Street at the intersection of Fleisher and Wilson Avenue is the Rockingham Co-op, our local hardware store.  Cross over Main and head back west towards the Highland Inn.  At the blinking traffic light is the Fast Break/BP convenience store. One block north on US 220 you will see Gutshall's Exxon where you can still get full service gas as well as pay at the pump.  On Fleisher Avenue, a half block behind the Exxon is Wool Becomes Ewe a yarn and fabric shop. Returning to Main Street, two doors west will bring you back to your starting point at the Highland Inn.

Sugar Tree Country Store, McDowellComing into Highland County from Staunton the first store you will see is Miller's Store in Headwaters. This General Store serving the eastern most part of the county is a good place to get a Dr. Pepper if you came off Shenandoah Mountain a little fast. When you enter the Village of McDowell you will see the Stonewall Grocery which you can get more information on our Dining Out page.  Sugar Tree Country Store is located on the street behind Stonewall Grocery and in addition to all kinds of gifts it is also one of Highland's Maple Syrup producers.  The McDowell Gas 'N Go is on the edge of the village and the last store until you get to Monterey.  Although there are no continuously open stores going west from Monterey towards West Virginia, on special occasions Hevener's Store at Hightown is sometimes open just to show what the old general stores were like.  Mr. Hevener opens for awhile during the Maple Festival and might have sodas available.

Southernmost Maple is located in Big Valley near Bolar just a couple of miles off U. S. 220.  If you are in the southern Blue Grass Valley, on Highway 84 there is Mill Gap Supply. At the northern end of the Blue Grass Valley in the Village of Blue Grass is Country Convenience.  There is more on this store on the Dining Out page.  At Fork of Waters in the northern part of the Monterey Valley is Ginseng Mountain Store a very interesting country store with lots of gifts.  Just north of Ginseng is Rexrode Country Store that can supply you with gas or food. If you need to see antiques, on the way to Harrisonburg via Franklin, you will go through the village of Brandywine.  Schaefer Antiques is a large establishment, well worth a stop. 40 miles south of Monterey are a few antique stored in Bath County Bath County Antiques .

There are many artisans, crafter's and other businesses that are not always walk-in type of stores but can be visited by pre-arrangement.  Please visit the Chamber of Commerce's Business Directory to see more on any specific businesses that might interest you.
